Scholarship Winner, April Reardon with Scholarship Chair, Elizabeth Rutledge
and Joan Wayland with Carol Moore
Saturday, April 17
at Camille's in Lancaster Maray Stowell spoke at the Saturday meeting.
Member Maray Stowell told about her experiences when she came to the U.S.A. with a group called the Pedro Pan children in 1962.
The Pedro Pan was a program created by the Catholic Welfare Bureau (Catholic Charities) of Miami in December 1960 at the request of parents in Cuba to provide an opportunity for them to send their children to Miami to avoid Marxist-Leninist indoctrination.
After the break in diplomatic relations on January 3, 1961, the Catholic Welfare Bureau was authorized by the U.S. Department of State to notify parents in Cuba that visa requirements had been waived for their children.
This enabled the children to travel by commercial flights to Miami.
Mr. Harry Keiley, our elected CalSTRS K-12 Teacher Representative and full-time
Santa Monica–Malibu Classroom Teachers Association President

at Camille's
We had probably one of the most exciting meetings we have had in a long time.
James "Bruce" Joseph Sievers was our speaker.
He has been nominated to be our next Poet Laureat
of the United States. (2012)
Bruce delighted us with several of his many poems.
When he began speaking,
he really commanded our full attention.
His poetry is so heartfelt that we were completely drawn in.

The Antelope Vallley Board of Directors with Vielka Elvebak, Ann Bush and Ann's Violin Students
We were again thrilled to have Ann Bush and her wonderful violin students. As always, the children wooed the audience. As the student's have grown, so have their abilities. The youngest is only 5 years old and is seen above with her brother and another student. Their selections were excellently chosen and played.
Vielka Elvebak, President of SCTA
(Student California Teachers Association)
gave a short presentation to introduce us to SCTA, an organization of student teachers affiliated with CTA.
